The Origin of Football in Leeds

by Mike Green

ISBN 0 9509982 1 4 Published by Mike Green, undated

Interesting introduction to the atmosphere in Leeds at the time of the football boom. Not much about Parkside but a reminder that modern Leeds United has its roots in the soccer section of the Hunslet club. In fact, they were asked to leave because the rugby second team were making a mess of the cricket ground outfield by allowing the soccer team to play on the rugby pitch.

One photograph across the ground towards the old main stand at Parkside but more about Elland Road. An interesting book, never the less.

Excellent general history of rugby football and the split which lead to the formation of the Northern Union with Hunslet as one of the founder clubs. Code 13

Code 13 was a series of magazines (17 in all) published with the intention of drawing together knowledge of the game's heritage. Several issues contained articles related to the Hunslet club. You might find it difficult to get hold of Code 13 now (try the local library) but if all else fails then get in touch.

Hunslet articles include: - Issue 1 - Dolly, a review of Frank "Dolly" Dawson's career as a player and coach.

Issue 3 - The Terrible Six of Hunslet looks at the corner stone of Hunslet's successful 1908 team, namely the pack. Issue 3 - Great Rugby League Tries Number 2, Tom van Vollenhoven in the 1959 Championship Final. Includes a section of a newspaper report praising Gabbitas, Gunney, Poole and Shaw.
