Billy Batten

A gifted member of the 1908 Four Trophies team and the start of a long Hunslet tradition - producing quality players which were then sold to other clubs. Batten was an interesting character. He left Parkside when he could not agree terms and on joing Hull for a record fee of £600 became, at £14 per match, the most highly paid player in the game. Despite being an outstanding player, he was not selected for the 1920 tour to Australia since he refused to play in a trial match. He reasoned that the selectors had already had ample time to decide if he was good enough. His most famous characteristic was leaping over opponents rather like an athelete jumping hurdles.
